Your participation is important to this class. I encourage you to keep the communication lines open with me at all times. I do care about your concerns and problems you may have. Classroom rules are posted and you will be expected to follow the Student Handbook.
Course Description
This class is a general requirement of all 8th grade students. Your school district and I firmly believe communication arts is a key ingredient to successful learning. The level eight communication arts course is specifically designed for each student to receive exposure to the fascinating realm of literature, reading comprehension, writing, and grammar. The student will explore various genres of literature; learn important reading strategies; continue to focus on literary elements; build their vocabulary; do book reports and engage in writing activities, including essays and research paper.
Elements that we will be incorporating into our class this year are:
Literature Reading
Writing
Grammar and Vocabulary
Book Reports
AR (Accelerated Reader)
STAR reading test
Grading
Grades will be weighted this year. The weighting will be as follows:
Homework 20%
Projects 20%
Quizzes 20%
Tests 40%
Miscellaneous
As a class, we will be going to the library every week. This will allow students to check out, or renew books, and AR test. It is the students’ responsibility to have both their books with them on library day. Students will be given time during class to read their book silently. Most homework will be done in class, and occasionally we will have outside work.
